WAR is a racket. It always has been.

It is possibly the oldest, easily the most profitable, surely the most vicious. It is the only one international in scope. It is the only one in which the profits are reckoned in dollars and the losses in lives.

A racket is best described, I believe, as something that is not what it seems to the majority of the people. Only a small "inside" group knows what it is about. It is conducted for the benefit of the very few, at the expense of the very many. Out of war a few people make huge fortunes.

In the World War [I] a mere handful garnered the profits of the conflict. At least 21,000 new millionaires and billionaires were made in the United States during the World War. That many admitted their huge blood gains in their income tax returns. How many other war millionaires falsified their tax returns no one knows.

How many of these war millionaires shouldered a rifle? How many of them dug a trench? How many of them knew what it meant to go hungry in a rat-infested dug-out? How many of them spent sleepless, frightened nights, ducking shells and shrapnel and machine gun bullets? How many of them parried a bayonet thrust of an enemy? How many of them were wounded or killed in battle?

Out of war nations acquire additional territory, if they are victorious. They just take it. This newly acquired territory promptly is exploited by the few – the selfsame few who wrung dollars out of blood in the war. The general public shoulders the bill.

And what is this bill?

This bill renders a horrible accounting. Newly placed gravestones. Mangled bodies. Shattered minds. Broken hearts and homes. Economic instability. Depression and all its attendant miseries. Back-breaking taxation for generations and generations.

For a great many years, as a soldier, I had a suspicion that war was a racket; not until I retired to civil life did I fully realize it. Now that I see the international war clouds gathering, as they are today, I must face it and speak out.

As did many others,I cheered the election of President O'Bama. The end of the Bush Regime - which left this country demoralized, hated, and bankrupt (of both capital and moral bearing) - was most welcome. The new administration brought a hope that we could now correct the wrongs of eight years of flagrant disregard for the Constitution and the ideals for which America has long stood. Sadly, that hope is increasingly fading, and a sickening malaise seems to have descended on the country - hopefullness being replaced with a gut-wrenching (all too familiar) hopelessness.
President O'Bama has determined to do nothing regarding the matter of torture. 'Moving on', as he phrased it, rather than looking backward into the past sounded pleasant enough. But then, most b.s. and 'distractive speech' does.
Torture.
Those quilty of torture should be jailed. Those who authorized such actions should be jailed. That's the law. <=== Note the 'period' at the end of that sentence. It's not debatable.
Accountability is required before we can even hope to 'move on'.

It is the center of our Solar system. And, not surprisingly, it looks nothing like you.

Priorities. Prioritizing. It's critical to the successful management of any undertaking. It assigns an order of importance to things. It requires decision, which operates on a perception of importance. It's not a difficult thing to do.

Fifteen years ago one in every fifteen hundred children born in America would suffer some form of Autism. 1 in 1,500. Today the statistic is one in every one hundred and ten. 1 in 110.

Let's prioritize. How important is this?

$300 Million Dollars. That's how important it is. That's the money our Government gave (in total) to deal with the matter of Autism. $300 Million.

$300 Million dollars is a lot of money, but then so is $100.00. Don't believe me? Next time you're broke imagine what you could do with a hundred bucks. $300 Million is a lot of money. It's also an insufficient amount of money. 1 in 110 children. In my view the increase in Autism is a national crisis. And by crisis I mean CRISIS. A plague. A national disaster.

Research and care and support are necessary. $300 Million . Inadequate. Superficial. Pathetic.

$300 Million. What was the amount our Government gave to Wall Street? Anyone remember? What was the amount spent - in real money and in borrowed funds - to wage war? Anyone remember? What was the amount spent on the last Presidential Campains? Anyone remember?

$300 Million. 1 out of every 110 new Americans.

I really don't need a calculater to figure out that $300 Million is woefully inadequate. Do you?

Priorities.

Disposable People

"At any given time," an Economist explained, "fully ten to fifteen percent of America's population is unnecessary."

"Unnecessary?"

"I know it sounds terrible, but... Yes. Unnecessary. Expendable."

"Expendable?"

Heavy sigh. "Look," he continued. "I'm not saying it's... Ok, it's callous, to be sure, but... It sounds terrible, I know." Another sigh. "But it's true. It's just the way it is. Those are the facts."

Unnecessary. Expendable. These are words that denote worth, value. To hear them applied to human beings is rather startling. Shocking, actually.

"It's an acceptable figure." the man continued. His eyes widened then he quickly added, "And by that, I mean the numbers. Ten to fifteen percent. I don't mean to imply that it's acceptable from... from... a moral standpoint."

His face flushed red.

"Unnecessary. Expendable. Disposable?"

It took a moment, and three more shades of crimson to color his face before he nodded his head slowly. "It's a sad fact of life, but a fact nonetheless."

I scratched my head not knowing what to say.

"But, they do serve a valuable purpose." he hurriedly added. "They are a good, necessary buffer. For the workforce. For the economy. For economic growth."

More words would not make this a more palatable concept.

"Look. It is the way it is." He set his jaw and stared at me, somewhat defiant.

Unnecessary. Expendable. Disposable.

"And what do we do with these unfortunate ten to fifteen percent?"

"That's not a concern of capitalism." he answered. That's a societal concern... a moral issue. It's not an issue in the study of capitalism. It has nothing to do with capitalism. It's not a factor."

"Not a factor?"

"No."

"I see."

"I mean... It's a factor for those involved in social issues, or... who have humanitarian concerns, or... It's not the concern of true capitalism itself. That's all I'm saying."

Indeed.

Money, Money, Money, Money.

Having survived the Bush-Cheney regime, I watched (with great hope and expectation) President O'Bama's administration move into 1600 PA. Avenue and begin a new chapter of American history. My expectations were high, to say the least. But, like many others, I find myself growing somewhat anxious and skeptical as each day passes.

"Yes we can!" It was a battle cry for change. Sadly, the words seem more and more just another hollow political campagn slogan, designed to ignite the voters support and to offer the promise of hope - but little else.

Change - real change - seems a distant, and somewhat impossible, dream. At least if one thinks government will effect the change. It won't.

Foreclosures continue at unprecedented rates, unemployment continues to rise, and continued economic collapse looms on the horizon in the form of (collapsing) Commercial Properties and budget shortfalls. Hard times.

We have not seen the worst, even though we're told we're on the rebound. Little has changed. The big banks continue giving outlandish bonuses to themselves (this time the average is $700,000.00) while the residents of 'Main Street America' struggle even more. They continue to lobby effectively in Washington D.C., thwarting any real chance of reform. And, our elected officials seemingly find no difficulty in accepting the millions offered in campaign contributions ($209+ Million so far in 2009).

Is there any hope - real hope - that change can happen? You betcha! And it is coming. Not from government, however. It never does. It's coming from where it always comes: the people. Our government is fractured; broken and ineffective. Our people, however, are not. Granted, they've been used and abused - and many are battered and bruised - but we have always risen to the occasion when required to do so. And we will now. Watch for it. It's coming.

I have great faith in America. And by 'America', I mean Americans. We the People.

Dear ACLU Supporter, On Friday night, in a national television interview, President Bush directly admitted what we have suspected all along: The White House was deeply and intimately involved in decisions about the CIA's use of torture.

For the first time, George W. Bush acknowledged that he knew his top national security advisers discussed and approved specific details of the CIA's use of torture. "I'm aware that our national security team met on this issue and I approved," he said. He also defended the use of waterboarding -- simulated drowning where the victim feels like they are about to die. Congress should long ago have gotten to the bottom of which top officials approved, condoned and authorized U.S. involvement in torture. But, now that the President has admitted to a policy of top-down torture, the ACLU is calling on Congress to demand an independent prosecutor to investigate possible violations of the War Crimes Act, the federal Anti-Torture Act and federal assault laws.

There are times in this country when we find ourselves at a crossroads-- where the path we choose has the potential to define us as a nation for generations to come. No doubt we've been at a critical juncture since September 11. How we respond to the atrocities thrust upon us after that terrible day says everything about who we are as Americans -- what values we defend, how the world sees us, and how history will remember us.

The manner in which we seek justice against those accused of harming us will determine whether the United States will be seen at home and abroad as a nation of laws. We must decide whether we live the values of justice that make us proud to be Americans, or whether we will forsake those values and continue down a path of arbitrary rules andprocedures more befitting those who are our enemies. Because we are agreat nation, true to our founders' vision, we must uphold our core values even in the toughest of times. The right to a speedy trialin a court of law before an objective arbiter; the right to dueprocess; the right to rebut the evidence against you; the right not to be tortured or waterboarded, or convicted on the basis of hearsat evidence are what truly define America and our commitment to the ruleof law and our founders' aspirations.

The military commissions set up by the Bush administration for the men imprisoned at Guantánamo Bay -- including those it suspects were involved in the September 11 attacks -- are not true American justice. These trials should represent who we are, what America stands for, and our commitment to due process. They are not about how civilized the accused are, but how civilized we are.

America does not stand for trials that rely on torture to gain confessions, or on secret evidence that a defendant cannot rebut, or on hearsay evidence. For these reasons, the ACLU and the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers have taken on the task of assembling defense teams tobe available to assist in the representation of those Guantánamo detainees who have been charged under the Military Commissions Act, subject to the detainees' consent. We take this step because we simply cannot stand by and allow the Bush administration's military commissions to make a mockery of our Constitution and our values. We believe in the American justice system-- despite its imperfections and distortions by pundits, politicians and ideologues -- and we believe we can make the system stronger by engaging it and fighting for what is right, fighting for fair trials and for America's reputation.

It is when the stakes are the highest and when tempers run the hottest that we must work doubly hard to keep a check on our government and prevent it from trading in our values for visceral and political motives -- no matter what the motivation. It is during the most challenging situations that our country's values are most intensely tested, and along with them, the ACLU's commitment to its core principles. We are determined, as we have always been, to meet this challenge.

Amar Bakshi, Washington Post Reporter, took a year to travel the world in an attempt to determine the world's 'Youth Opinion' of America. It was a rather daring project, and the information gained was rather startling. C-SPAN aired a pesentation by Mr. Bakshi followed by a Q&A period. A video can be seen at NewAmerica.com and/or WashingtonPost.com/America.

As a young reporter, Mr. Bakshi showed remarkable insight into todays youths concerns, politics, and opinions. And his analysis of these was quite insightful and in-depth as well. At the core of Mr. Bakshi's findings was a perceived threat from America against Islam. Many Islamic youth around the world see at least some validity to the notion that America is out to destroy Islam - and on a worldwide scale.

Bobby Kennedy, during a speech in South Africa, once said: "Governments oppress their people." It's a truth that has existed for quite a long time. America is not the only nation to 'slant the news' or manipulate the facts surrounding a particular event or movement - it's a worldwide practice and a dilemma for all. Each nation has their own political agenda and those that manipulate their populace in accordance with that agenda. A young Muslim in the U.K. may perceive the detainment of Muslim's by the U.S. one way, a young Muslim in Pakistan may view the matter in an entirely different way. A great deal is dependent upon the local issues and concerns these youth may be dealing with, and the political agendas active in his/her neighborhood.

It should come as no surprise to anyone that the view of America held by most young Muslims is overwhelmingly negative. There is a perceived threat from America against Islam and, therefore, against them personally. American politico's are aware of this and are desperate to find ways to improve America's image around the world - as are American business leaders. To date, they have failed miserably. It's difficult, and in this case impossible, to convince someone of America's 'goodness' when all they see and hear and experience scream otherwise.

The Bush Regime may claim we are 'establishing democracy' in the Middle East, but that is not the perception held by the youth throughout the Middle East. It may be what what was 'sold' to Americans, but it's not being 'bought' by young Muslims elsewhere in the world.

During Mr. Bakshi's presentation, a number of disturbing trends were brought to light that, I'm sure, most Americans are completely unaware of. One was that most of the world is not intimidated by America's 'Super Power' status. Another is that Americas intervention anywhere, regardless of its purpose or intent, is overwhelmingly viewed as bad. But, the most startling revelation - at least to me - was that the Muslim youth of the world now tend to view America as 'evil' - not just bad, or self-serving, or corrupt, but 'evil'. Additionally, they also no longer perceive a difference between the American government and the American people - to them, it's one in the same. It doesn't matter that two thirds of the American people oppose the war in Iraq - America is there, waging war, occupying - and promises to continue to do so. Afterall, we are a democracy, 'of the people, by the people, and for the people', aren't we? Doesn't a democratic nation reflect the will of the people? Maybe not according to the Bush family, or Dick Cheney's group, but the rest of the world thinks so.

This is an issue of concern which ranks right up there with global warming, poverty and hunger, and any other global concern you may have. It's an issue which needs to be addressed immediately - and slick, Madison Avenue-type sales pitches won't suffice. There needs to be genuine concern, genuine effort, and fair and equitable actions taken. American interests must be viewed on a global scale and recognize the interests of other nations and peoples as well.

Arundhati Roy, the Indian writer/activist once said that change will not occur until "America recognizes that a world exists beyond its borders". There's a great truth in these words that we must recognize before we, as a nation, can hope to effectively turn the tide of anti-Americanism which is growing at an alarming rate all over the globe. We cannot just wave our flag, pound a drum, and arbitrarily proclaim America is 'right'. We, as a nation and a people, must really examine the facts and seek the truth of what our government and multi-national corporations have done (and are doing) throughout the world - and the results of such actions. We must demand accountability from those in charge, and we must be willing to not only recognize, but admit, errors we may have made.

The Muslim youth of the world perceive America as a personal threat. It's a perception we must recognize and deal with. We must do so honestly and fairly, and in genuine good faith. A good start might be to quit trying to tell Muslims what the Koran says, or explain its meaning to them. It's an arrogant and condescending and stupid thing to do.

Muslims know what 'extremists' are. They also know what is and isn't correct interpretations of the Koran. Christianity has extremists too. It has narrow-minded, bigotted, racist members as well. True Christians recognize those who misinterpret scripture or manipulate scripture for personal gain - or control of political groups. And, before it's voiced that 'Christian extremists' don't blow things up, remember back to the days when abortion clinics, and Doctors and Nurses, were reduced to dust and rubble. There are extremists in every group. We cannot demonize an entire faith due to the actions of a few - otherwise, we, personally, must assume responsibility for the actions of Bush and Cheney, and their cronies, who have manipulated and perverted our Constitution, lied, tortured, killed, and completely ignored the will of the American people.

It is time for real change in America.

I suggest we begin with a truthful, honest, examination of our actions around the globe.

Full Speed Ahead?

With Admiral Fallon (CENTCOM Commander) out of the way and off to retirement George Bush has, seemingly, an open field to go ahead with his desire to invade Iran. Certainly those he has chosen to surround him are unlikely to voice any opposition; 'Yes men' never do.

Admiral Fallon opposed invading Iran openly, stating it would "never happen on his watch". Voices of reason, and opposition, do not fair well with the Bush Regime. Apparently you are either with him or against him. Fully two-thirds of Americans (and the number is growing) are clearly against him when it comes to the war in Iraq; even more oppose the invasion of Iran. This, of course, matters very little to Emperor George. It's his way or his way, and that's all there is to it.

In recent speeches and press releases he has already equated Iran with the terrorists, sprinkled in a few spoonfuls of WMD's, and stated that Bin Laden's crew would get 'our oil' in Iraq. Fear tactics abound and promise to increase.

While the majority of Americans sigh a sigh of relief realizing that Georgie-boy will soon be out of office, it is a nervous sigh. There are still quite a few days between now and his departure and a great deal of damage can still be done.

Would Congress allow such an action? At their own peril I would suppose. Would Georgie-boy even ask their approval or (as he's done so many times already) would he 'assume more power and authority' and simply circumvent Congress and the Constitution?

For those of you who pray, I suggest you start. For those of you who don't, I suggest you learn.

[A sincere 'Thank you' to Admiral Fallon not only for his service, but for his courage and valor as well. Our Armed Forces and our Nation are sure to miss him.]

America' security threatened - by Bush

The correct answer, of course, is: (e)all of the above.

In nearly the same breath the Bush boy extolled the necessity of renewing the FISA bill then promised to veto the very same bill if it did not provide retroactive immunity for the Telecoms which acted illegally [as did the government] in spying on American citizens.

America’s security, which the idiot claimed would be threatened without FISA, is now being threatened by the Bush Regime. Immunity for the Telecoms or increased risk of attack by terrorists? Is that really what the Commander in Chief has threatened? Yes, it is.

The Congress approved a fifteen day extension of FISA, to allow for further discussion, consideration, and debate. ??? They’ve had a year to digest the contents of this legislation.

I would suggest the Congress allow the legislation to lapse. If they don’t, then they should extend the bill without the demanded immunity for the Telecoms. Then the Bush boy will have to decide what is more important – America’s security or the Telecoms immunity. He has already threatened the veto so we know where his interest lies, but forcing the insane man to go on record with his choice will preserve for posterity the fact that the fascist Bush boy is, in fact, the single greatest threat to America and its security.

My Country

“Even today, there is little value in ensuring the survival of our nation if its traditions do not survive with it.” - President John F. Kennedy –

What America is, has been, and is becoming, warrants serious consideration.

The words of John Kennedy, although they may make us uncomfortable, require that Americans consider what type of society we are, and are going to be. Our traditions of freedom, honor, and justice for all are the cornerstone of our nation. The loss of these basic values strips America of all that it stands for and all that it has stood for. Without these basic truths in operation, and vigorously defended, America ceases to be America.

I am an American. I believe in the ideals and values of America, but I cannot subscribe to the concept that America deserves blind support of its citizenry when it strays from our core beliefs. ‘America, right or wrong’ is as un-American a sentiment as George Bush senior’s words – “I will never apologize for America. No matter what the facts are.”

This type of blind allegiance, this cheap patriotism, is wholly un-American. It is the type of rhetoric most often heard when our government undertakes actions to circumvent our freedoms and protections, our rights and liberties, and our Constitution. America is more than the beating of a drum and the waving of a flag. America is more than idle words, insincere rhetoric, and false patriotism.

In 1931 we adopted the Star Spangled Banner as our National Anthem. The words of the Anthem speak for us to some degree, just as our flag represents us. The words proclaim not only who we are, but what we are as a society and nation. They recount our initial struggle for freedom and each stanza ends with the familiar words: “O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave.”

It is interesting to note that in the first stanza, unlike the other three, the line is a question : “Oh say, does that star-spangled banner yet wave, O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave?” It’s a question we might consider today. Our flag flies proudly not only at home, but at places all over the world. It is a symbol not only of our nation, but of freedom – or, at least it has been. Today, many see it as a symbol of dominance and imperialism, and aggression. Some see it as a symbol of tyranny; the very thing we fought against when our nation was formed.

These are trying times in our history. These are times that, truly, test men’s souls. It is not an easy thing to criticize America. It is not easy to recognize and admit our wrong doing. But one must ask if our actions of late have been in the highest tradition of our country; have our actions been just? And, we must also ask, “Oh say, does that star-spangled banner yet wave o’er the land of the free and the home of the brave?” If not, then John Kennedy’s words have sounded the death toll of this grand experiment in democracy that we call America.

'And this be our motto: "In God is our trust"
And the star-spangled banner in triumph shall wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave!'

As a nation we have always invoked God, and God’s blessings. We have proclaimed our nation as a nation ‘trusting in God’. We use the words ‘one nation under God’ in our pledge of Allegiance. Yet, sadly, we have, of late, acted ungodly.

Micah 6:8 - He hath shewed thee, O man, what [is] good; and what doth the Lord require of thee, but to do justly, and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with thy God.

We have allowed the actions of a militant few to to cause us to throw off the very liberties we cherish for a false sense of safety. We have allowed a militant few to cause us to demonize an entire faith of others. We have, in fear, acquiesced to a government which views our most cherished Constitution as ‘just a goddamned piece of paper’ and has circumvented its proclamations at a whim. We have allowed a government, hell-bent on winning at all costs, to usurp all that we hold dear.

What is America without freedom? What is America without justice? What is America without truth? Sadly, it is nothing.

Justice

Attorney General Michael Mukasey’s remarks – rather his lack of concise, succinct responses - regarding ‘water boarding’ (which he previously stated he felt was repugnant) was a display of Washington-style BS at its best. His verbiage set a new standard in excess. Never before have I heard so many pontificate endlessly and say absolutely nothing.

Members of the Senate Judiciary Committee found a very frustrating participant in the Attorney General, who appeared to be no more than yet one more Bush-backing, doublespeak supporter and protector of the current administration; more intent on ‘winning’ than seeking truth or justice.

When asked the simple question, “Has there been any communication between your office and the Whitehouse regarding the destruction of the (CIA) tapes?” he answered, “I don’t understand the question.” What a brilliant legal mind.

Stonewalling, half-truths, and outright lies have been the status quo of this administration and its appointees. And, even at this late stage of the administrations term, it continues. At the heart of the issue is torture; and the possibility of war crime charges and charges of crimes against humanity. Michael Mukasey suggested that ‘certification of authorization’ was a crucial issue, however, the excuse that ‘one was only following orders’ was dismissed years ago – decades ago – as unacceptable at Nuremberg.

Basic standards concerning human rights do not change with circumstance. Nor do they require renewed approval of a particular government or government leader. They are basic rights.

The back-story here – and there always is a back-story – is whether our Justice Department is a department of justice or simply another tool of the White House to mislead, misinform, and protect violators. Can our government investigate itself? I don’t think so. A Special Prosecutor is needed, but won’t be appointed. Deception, secret activities, and blatant disregard for the rule of law will continue – at least while Mukasey is Attorney General – but it will not prevail. Eventually, the truth will come out.

“How far from our moorings we’ve strayed.” remarked Senator Leahy near the close of the meeting. Indeed.

State of the Bushshit

I really didn’t want to, but I couldn’t help it – so, I watched the self-centered, self-absorbed, self-appointed King George address the chamber of our elected Representatives, Judiciary, and guests. I started my computer, opened my word processor program, and prepared to take notes.

It didn’t take very long before I was shaking my head and wondering if the rich, young Ruler – No. 43 as he likes to be called – was actually living on the same planet, or in the same dimension. When the words “American self-government” and “…right of individuals to determine their destiny…” came out of his mouth my mind almost went numb. For a moment I seriously thought my ears had lied to me. I was stunned. This, coming from the (self-appointed) Emperor, was hard to swallow. I turned up the volume.

He threatened a veto, said he had a plan which would not only balance the budget but provide a surplus by 2012 ( yeah, right), and asked Congress to approve his Trade Agreement with Columbia – where we would show the Columbians that “Democracy leads to a better life”; a message that might prove a hard sell to over three million displaced Iraqi’s. He went on to talk of Science and Research, extolling that “All life is treated with the dignity it deserves”. Another message which might prove hard to sell to the average Iraqi – who he claimed were seeing improvements in their daily lives. There was mention of schools and hospitals being built but nothing of the lack of electricity and water and heating oil the average Iraqi must contend with.

There was the plea to Support the Troops – which generally means “give me more money to continue the occupation”. He assured the Military they would have “all that they needed”, but made no mention of the cuts to the VA budget or co-pay for care to the wounded Veterans.

He asked for the renewal of the Protect America Act, stressing the need for immunity [retroactive] for the Utilities which initially, and illegally, complied in wiretaps and eavesdropping. (See: http://Whitehouse.senate.gov/video/120707.ram)

He spoke of conscience and the genocide in Sudan – where American investments are doing well – but said nothing of the genocide of the Iraqi people, nor their illegal detention and torture (which includes woman and children).

He threatened Iran. He even repeated his lies regarding the 'supposed WMD's' he claims they are pursuing. Something our own CIA has disavowed.

He said good things about the Constitution - which he had twice before called "just a goddamned piece of paper", and has repeatedly ignored. He said we were a nation of laws - most of which he has ignored or curcumvented. He praised the Judiciary but failed to mention he has still not complied with two Supreme Court rulings requiring the government to turn over documentation to the ACLU.

He told us that the strength of America is found in its people – of which 67% think he’s a jerk – then asked God to bless America and signed autographs.

Oh, I almost forgot… he also said that the State of the Bushshit was strong. Finally, something I could agree with.

War Crimes

U.S. Soldiers admit to witnessing and/or commiting war crimes which, they say, they were encouraged to do by senior Officers.

"It was Unit Policy. Army Policy - Unofficial Policy, but Policy nonetheless."

The statements leave no doubt that the illegal occupation of Iraq has no hope of establishing a free and independent, democratic Iraq - nor was it ever intended to.

These young men - undoubtedly torn and damaged - will have to live with what they've done. Unfortunately, those they 'did it to' will not have that option. Iraq, as a nation and a people, are being destroyed, and the destruction, it seems, is systematic and intentional.

This insanity must stop. This genocide must end. And those who encouraged and condoned these actions must be held accountable - including this administration.

The boy who cried Wolf (Blitzer)

A few days ago Mr. Blitzer announced on the ‘most trusted name’ newscast that al-Qaida was now possibly as strong, or stronger, than pre 9/11 strength. The words caught my attention and I paused, waiting for further information. I got a commercial break instead. When Mr. Blitzer returned to the screen he continued with his previous story – periodically repeating the announcement about the terrorist group's new found strength.

Another ‘stay afraid America’ scare tactic? I wondered, as Mr. Blitzer hyped the story yet again. Hmm... this was a potentially shocking bit of news, if true. If not true then...

How could we know this particular terrorist group's strength? How would that be verified? I didn’t know. What I did know, however, was this: If the statement was, in fact, true then this administration’s War on Terror has been an absolute and utter failure. After five years of weakening the Constitution, waging war, killing and maiming so many, destroying Iraq, weakening our Forces, trillions of dollars in debt, massive Corporate earnings, a hemorrhaging economy, and countless lies by our government – we had not made an inch of progress in combating al-Qaida? Not a single inch of progress in five years? Whoa! And again, Whoa!

What about it Mr. Bush? Hello?

It turns out that there was no big, in-depth story. Just the statements and the announcement that two (possibly three) suicide bombers had allegedly been dispatched from Pakistan to Spain ‘fresh from al-Qaida training camps’. They had, according to Court records, everything needed to accomplish their mission - except lethal explosive charges.

Lesson learned? Wolf Blitzer could sell ice to Eskimos. He really could. The man has talent in hyping things. What happened to real, honest news? It died a long time ago. What we get now from mainstream media is nothing more than hype and propoganda - no more than a platform to distribute commercial advertisement and derisive, manipulative, misinformation.

Conflicted Faith

I recently spent some time perusing a few of the leading 'Christian' magazines and on-line 'zines. I saw a lot on politics, happiness, paths to take to ensure God's blessings, and reasons why 'Christian ministries' should not have to be transparent regarding their financial records.

I saw very little with regard to the war, injustice, hunger, missions which required service to others, or the central message of Jesus - "Love one another as I have loved you."

Before you think otherwise, I am not bashing Christianity, nor Jesus. I'm just wondering why the western world's concept of Christianity is so contradictory and self-serving.

Depending on what poll you choose to accept, between 71% to 83% of adult Americans claim to be Christian - to have a personal relationship with the Creator. Amazing when you think about it (and even when you don't).

One would think they would see some sort of indication (in tangible ways) of this prevailing faith in a country when so many profess such faith. Sadly, one doesn't.

I recently had occasion to hear a popular minister in America discuss 'American Christianity' and the motivations behind the faith. I found it interesting that he used the term 'American Christianity'. American as opposed to what? Non-American Christianity? Strange. Well, on second thought, maybe not. Is it possible that there is a unique brand of Christianity that is strictly 'American'? After some reflection I must concur that there is. Where else can we have such contradictions between what is professed and what is practiced but here in the good old USA.

I am by no means a scholar when it comes to scripture, but I can read. And I recognize the significance, and influence, professions of faith have in this country. (Could a professed athiest have a hope of winning a political seat at the national level in America? How about an agnostic? Or a Jewish President? A Muslim President? Doubtful. Seriously doubtful.) Professions of a personal faith are almost mandatory now for anyone seeking public office. (I suppose that's to reassure those they represent that they won't do anything remotely beneficial for 'them hom'sexual types'.)

Our President is a Christian. He's also a liar. Apparently that's an acceptable mix in America. As are Ministers who preach happiness and personal growth, and wealth and prosperity (and amass great wealth and political influence in the process) but make no mention of 'denying oneself' and following Jesus in a ministry of 'service to others'. It's a perplexing thing this contradictory faith. But, then again we are a contradictory society. We're Christian, but believe in capitalism (even though Jesus said "You cannot serve God and money both"). We say we love peace but wage (or support) more war than any other nation. We claim freedom but submit to near dictatorial control for safety. We claim to support human rights, but we torture others. What is one to think of this?

Could it be that some of those 71% to 83% of Americans are deceived? Or, like our President, are they just lying?

Jesus once said that 'you will know His followers by their fruits'. Just as apple trees don't produce oranges, Christians (regardless of what they 'say') do not pursue wealth over justice, nor war over peace. And they certainly don't torture.

"If any man says he loves God, yet hates his brother, he is a liar. And the truth is not in him."

Aah! It just dawned on me... Perhaps, just perhaps, the term 'American Christian' is used to differentiate between them and real Christians. What do you think?

America's Shame

I recently commented on the efforts of the ACLU to secure documentation regarding the treatment of detainees held by the American government. During my research I discovered that children were also being held in confinement, and that allegations of abuse (including rape) had been leveled against those in charge of the detainees. The thought of children being used and abused in order to force information from their parents was not only startling, but nauseating as well.

I admit that I didn’t want to believe the allegations, but – as the old adage goes – a picture is worth a thousand words. Here then are three thousand words to consider:

With the News focusing on the economy and the upcoming election it is important that we do not allow other issues to fall by the wayside. This issue is of paramount concern and must be addressed. Emperor Bush may ‘say’ we do not torture, but he lies. We have, shamefully; and we do. But children? Children? What sick minds can even think to defend this barbarism?

For those (and sadly I find the number growing) who say they’re tired of hearing about the war in Iraq, I would suggest you take another look at these pictures. And consider how tired those depicted are of the war. And of us.

This is Democracy in action? This is what America does? And we wonder why they call us ‘the great Satan’?

It is time for Americans to take back our government and our country from the sicko’s who have usurped it. It is time to restore our civil liberties, quit living in fear, and (above all else) hold our government accountable for these crimes against humanity.

Broken Government

For some time now I’ve said that the Government is broken; broken and, possibly, beyond repair. This morning the House of Representatives passed an economic stimulus package and were quick to proclaim that it proved the government was not broken. Rep. John Boehner was front and center on CNN proclaiming just that. Ridiculous. What the quick action proves is that our Representatives can act when they want to – or are pressured to – which is, among other things, a rare occurrence.

Whether the economic stimulus package is a viable action or not is not the issue. The issue is that our ineffective, do-nothing Congress, gets no accolades for getting off their collective, self-serving asses, and finally doing (once) their job. It’s what they’re paid (well) to do. Do the citizens of this country pat themselves on the back and grin and postulate – have a photo-op - and applaud themselves for doing their jobs? No. And the average American does his job every day. What’s the real lesson learned here? Elected officials can function when necessary; when pressured? No. It underscores the fact that the Congress (which should have seen the economic mess coming months ago) is a knee-jerk, too little too late, out-of-touch group of elitists idiots. They’re ‘band-aid providers’ in an economy that is beginning to hemorrhage – an economy they created by the way.

Leading economists have expressed serious doubt as to the long-term effectiveness of this stimulus package, and I tend to agree with them. But Pelosi and Boehner, with big smiles and pat’s to their own backs, act as if they accomplished a great thing. I suppose, after crawling on their knees behind Emperor Bush for so long, they’re just excited to realize they actually have feet to stand on.

And the catch phrase of the day – “Right or wrong, at least give us credit for doing ‘something’” – is as stupid and revealing a statement as I’ve ever heard.

Our government is broken – and remains broken. Can we fix it? Yes. This November send everyone in Washington DC home – permanently. It’s time to take back our government, and our country.

Civil Rights Leader. Nobel Prize Laureate. These are just two of the more common titles used to describe Dr. King. But they, like most others, fail to adequately describe the man. Certainly he was these, but more.

In reflecting on Dr. King’s life I find one thing which (to me) seems to far outshine any accolade or title that can (and has) been bestowed on the man: Minister. It was what he was and, more importantly, what he did.

In his speech against the war in Vietnam he stated “I am determined to take the Gospel seriously". It was a profound and revealing statement which gave us a brief glimpse into the core of this dynamic man. It was a statement of purpose, and a pronouncement of faith. “I am determined to take the Gospel seriously”. These words are powerful words. They are both a declaration and explanation: a declaration of faith in God and an explanation as to why he did what he did and how he did it. Like the Apostle Paul, following his encounter with Christ on the road to Damascus, I think Dr. King had no choice when it came to involving himself in matters of justice and equality, and peace. Having ‘seen the light’ he could not remain in the dark, silent and uninvolved. It’s not what men of faith do. But, unlike many Ministers of modern times (if, in fact, Ministers are really what they are), he did not preach to manipulate and sustain a political force, nor preach a gospel of self-enrichment. Instead, like a New Testament Apostle, he preached justice and mercy and grace, and love. And with a power and strength which could only have come ‘from on high’, and through submission, he, like the patriarch of old, also cried “Let my people go” to an oppressive and unjust force. With a boldness and courage no less evident than Daniel when faced with the lion’s den he stood and proclaimed the truth – the truth of the injustice and inequities which abounded, and the truth of the oppressive and dictatorial practices of his own government.

He is most often remembered for his “I have a Dream” speech – which is, of course, remarkable. However, it was his speech against the war in which his words were lifted far above national boundaries and race and economies to a universal level and beyond – a level above the control of governments and powers made by men. “I have determined to take the Gospel seriously” required Dr. King to take the burdens of man to a realm where men ceased to be the ultimate power. “I have determined to take the Gospel seriously” allowed Dr. King to take his concerns and burdens into the very ‘Holy of Holies’ and cry “Abba, Father”. His declaration, “I have determined to take the Gospel seriously” also forced others to recognize that there exists a power, an authority, above that of man – or to reject that authority.

“I have determined to take the Gospel seriously” is a statement that demands a response; a response which requires more than a simple affirmation or consent to a creed. It demands a response by action and deed.

“Why call me Lord if you do not what I say?” Jesus once asked. It is a question which remains as valid today as then. And, requires more than a self-justifying belief which focuses more on what the believer receives than what the believer is required to give.

“This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you.”

It is, perhaps, impossible to define Dr. King in a word or a multitude of words. To me he is many things, but nothing he was exceeds that which he himself proclaimed to be: a man who “determined to take the Gospel seriously”.

Man of peace?

Georgie-porgie recently acknowledged that he knows many consider him to be a war monger, but – he considers himself a man of peace; a peacemaker. That, of course, explains the $20 Billion arms deal he took to the Saudi’s recently in order to help negotiate lower oil prices. Nothing screams peace like cluster bombs and missile systems.

The advent of 2008, like most new years, offers a chance (a hope, a wish, a prayer) of change. And though a fresh start may be the wish, new beginnings rarely prove fruitful when governed by old tactics and desires.

As the celebration of the new year fades I wonder just how much change will be realized. Can America do the right thing? Will it? We live in a society that is motivated by financial markets and financial gain. The saddest thing about that is that most see no problem in that belief. Capitalism, it is thought, is the ideal. But is it?

I suppose it’s a matter of how much more we deem our value over the value of others. And make no mistake, we do – as a society – view ourselves as ‘more valuable’. It doesn’t sound nice, but it’s true. And I find that interesting considering we view ourselves to be a Christian nation. Doesn’t the Scripture tell us to ‘esteem others over ourselves’? It’s the classic ‘do as I say, not as I do’ syndrome. Something Americans have refined to a fine art. We proclaim high ideals, however, in practice we deceive ourselves. In short, we choose to believe the lie. Why? We do not torture. It’s a lie, but we continue to perpetuate that lie. Again, why? Mr. Huckabee promotes a Constitutional Amendment ‘more in line with God’s will’ (according to him) which completely sets aside the great theological issue of grace vs. works, showing himself to be a very poor biblical scholar but a good polarizing politician. And some accept his proposal as good and moral. Why?

I recently looked through a widely used history textbook used in American public schools. I found it interesting to note that not once was there cited any occasion in which America made a mistake. Interesting. Not once since our inception as a free nation have we erred or done a wrong thing. Believable? No. But each year we continue to teach our children the same (ridiculous) stories. Why? Because the stories are more palatable than the truth. If we taught our children the truth, we might find a generation of Americans standing up in unison screaming “Stop. Wait. Unfair”. That, of course, would be unacceptable.

I know many might claim I’m off on another diatribe of America-bashing, but that would be simplistic and untrue. What I am doing is calling for Americans to be honest, to tell the truth. Didn’t Jesus tell us that the truth would set us free? (Us and a great many others around the world who are currently suffering under the weight of American intervention.) Oh, in case you didn’t know, He also said “You cannot serve God and money both.” Was he lying? Or just a poor capitalist?

Col. Muammar al-Qaddafi, at 27 years old, overthrew the King of the United Kingdom of Libya on September 1, 1969. He quickly moved to align himself with the worlds most treacherous leaders, and promoted anti-Western terrorism. His ordered acts of terrorism and death are long and well documented. In 1968 then President Ronald Reagan ordered approximately 66 U.S. aircraft to attack Libya in response to a Libyan supported bombing in Berlin. Since that attack the Colonel, and Libya as a whole, has been virtually ignored, and isolated, by/from most of the world.

In 2003 the Libyan leader stepped back onto the world stage announcing that he would cease pursuit of nuclear weapons and WMD’s and, as an act of good faith, turned over his supply of dated and dried ‘yellow cake’. (2003, it should be noted, is the same year the Colonel ordered the assassination of the head of the Saudi Royal family. The attempt failed.)

So, one might wonder, what’s up with this man that most Western leaders had referred to, and proclaimed, a mad man in the past? A change of heart? An epiphany of sorts that has now transformed him from terrorist to saint? This is the same man who sent agents to blow up Pan Am Flight 103 which killed 270 - Americans, British, and others.

Let’s consider a few things. The UK, in it’s wisdom, immediately decided (with U.S. approval) to reward the former mad man by agreeing to sell him the latest in conventional arms and armament (complete with training by the UK’s own military trainers). Exactly what every former mad man should have; a modern, well-equipped, well-trained Army. In addition, France (again with U.S. approval) has negotiated to build a nuclear power plant in Libya. What more could a former mad man want? Credibility? The U.S. gave that by removing Libya from the list of countries deemed as terrorist or terrorist-supporting.

Of course, Libya’s order of roughly $10 billion in new AirBus aircraft probably went a long way in calming the last few fears any Western leader may have had about his sincerity. And the possible $6.4 billion dollars Westinghouse may receive for its nuclear reactor didn’t hurt either. Ok, his oil (which is plentiful) probably had a bit of influence as well.

But what the heck, let bygones be bygones, after all the Colonel himself said that the government in Libya (which is him) is the truest form of democracy being practiced in the world today. Western leaders apparently agree.

Renewed complaints concerning treatment of detainees/prisoners in U.S. detention facilities have surfaced which allege brutality far worse (and perverted) than previously reported. Still, the administration chooses to remain secretive, and data and documents are not forthcoming. Allegations of rape, torture, and death have been met with stonewalling, denials, and silence.

Congressional leadership – either unwilling or simply due to incompetence – has failed to hold this administration accountable and certainly seems ineffective in securing further information/documentation (including photo’s and video) known to exist.

The ACLU has continued to push for the evidence under the ‘Freedom of Information Act’ but the government remains distant and does not seem willing to cooperate fully.

Eye witnesses have sworn to what can only be considered as barbaric treatment of detainees (some children) including the rape of a young boy.

Controlled or limited access to the detainees by members of the Red Cross – itself an unconscionable and abhorrent act – leads one to assume the government has much to conceal. After all, aren’t they the ones who keep telling us ‘If you have nothing to hide, why worry?’ as they continue to strip away our civil liberties?

In a recent Republican Presidential Candidates debate one of the gentleman refuted John Edwards contention that there are two Americas in existence. He claimed, rather patriotically and with practiced conviction, that there exists only one America. He is wrong. There are indeed two Americas: The America we think exists, and the America that actually does exist.

In 1953 Iran, then a free and democratic nation, was introduced to the ‘Shah’, courtesy of the United States and the CIA. Today, thanks to America’s failed and foolish intervention, Iran is what it is. The Iranian people suffered greatly under the American imposed and supported ‘Shah of Iran’, and for many years. When the people of Iran finally revolted (as people usually do when oppressed by rulers that hold no interest in their welfare) America had once again ‘created’ a new worst enemy.

A half a century later America is in the midst of repeating the same mistake and creating yet another new worst enemy. The government of Iraq, like their U.S. backers, has invested little toward the welfare of the Iraqi people; corruption abounds. Millions upon millions of dollars, and control of untold millions more, has most Iraqi officials at each others throats. Shiite officials now contend with other Shiite officials for control and governance of certain Iraqi assets, and positions of control and influence in certain Ministries. The battle for power (and its accompanying wealth) has permeated this U.S. governed government. Does something smell a little fishy here? No, not fishy, oily.

The bottom line is that the Iraqi people have been left to fend for themselves. With little help from either the U.S. or Iraqi governments, many Iraqi’s have fled to Syria. There, many woman have been forced into prostitution in order to feed their families. The exploitation of the displaced Iraqi’s by the Syrians has been atrocious, but even more atrocious is the complete and total lack of provisions and protections for the Iraqi’s by either their own government or the Coalition leaders.

Fast-forward a few years from now and wonder why the Iraqi people might not view America very favorably.

Are we forever doomed to repeat our failures and continue to create our own worst enemies? The myopic view our government has of the world will prove quite costly in the future, yet again.

Our so-called leaders have said 'they hate us because of our freedoms'. How sanctimonious, and stupid. We have a long history in the Middle East, and it's not a good history.

In the audio recording below (dtd 2006) Congressman Dennis Kucinich refers to George Bush’s plan to permanently base U.S. Troops in Iraq. Last week the so-called leaders of the U.S. and Iraq agreed (in principle) to just such an action.

It is now more than obvious that Mr. Bush’s war was not to liberate the Iraqi people from a brutal dictatorship, but to invade and occupy a nation for control of their natural resources. In the agreement signed last Monday, 50,000 U.S. Troops will be based in Iraq for the long term, and the United States will retain a large degree of control over the ‘democratically elected’ Iraqi government.

Is there any other conclusion to be drawn but that this action is no more than colonial-style control of one nation over another for the purpose of exploitation? In less ambiguous words: It's all about the oil.

Liberation, or the war on terror, can no longer be used as the reason for our invasion.

In 1961 then President John Kennedy challenged the American people to land a man on the moon before the end of the decade. In February of 1962 John Glenn orbited the earth three times and just seven years later Neil Armstrong stepped down onto the surface of the moon. The challenge was met. It was a testament to what American determination can accomplish. So why is it that now, in our fifth year of the occupation of Iraq, the Iraqi people are still without running water, reliable electrical power, or adequate medical aid and supplies? Because, sadly, that is not where George Bush’s interests lie. Let’s not deceive ourselves any longer. Freedom for the people of Iraq was never Mr. Bush’s goal. Granted, it was what we were told, but it just doesn’t hold true.

I cannot remember a time in the history of America when the government so blatantly defied the will of the people, and with such arrogance. Make no mistake, these are sad days for America and every American. Our core values and beliefs, our Constitution and civil liberties, our principles and ideals, are being trampled right before our eyes. And all the while, the citizens of Iraq suffer. And they suffer in ways we cannot begin to fathom. These are the people we supposedly went to liberate. These are the people whose freedom, we were told, we went to secure. Yet in real, tangible, practical terms, they are, seemingly, the last concern of those controlling their land.

Before the money brokers, investors, oil sellers and resellers, commodity brokers, policy makers, and governments consider the disposition and control of Iraqi oil, they should look long and hard at the suffering Iraqi people. That is where they will see the real cost of each barrel of the oil they value so much.

War is a terrible thing. Monstrous. It is what happens when mankind sinks to its lowest level. Some are convinced that wars are inevitable; a necessary evil at times. But that is usually the voice of those who have not seen war close up, or the devastation that it causes. War is, in reality, a futile effort. There are no victors really, only the dead and the survivors and those who mourn; and the sad realization that mankind has not progressed nearly as much as we’d hoped.

Some proclaim war as a noble venture. They lie. It’s not. It is the collapse of reason and civility, and the loss of our humanity. It is usually driven by greed and avarice, by stupid men with small minds; men who lack the intelligence and the will to resolve matters fairly and equitably and are, more likely than not, politicians.

When I was younger, Senator Robert Francis Kennedy was one of the men I most admired. He seemed to be all that a man should be. His commitment and dedication were only exceeded, it seemed, by his passion. He was an idealist.

He not only called people to action, he instilled in them a desire to be involved; a desire to strive to make the world a better place, and not just for ourselves, but for others.

He was truly a remarkable man.

The world at the time of Robert F. Kennedy was turbulent to say the least. Even so, he remained true to his beliefs and worked to effect change. When he, like his brother John, was assassinated the country once more fell into mourning. Men, women and children wept openly in the streets. The country lined the railroad tracks in the hopes of catching a glimpse of the casket, carried by train from Los Angeles back east, and to pay their respect. So many good men had been taken from us, violently, during those days; John Kennedy, Dr. Martin Luther King, and ‘Bobbie’ (as most referred to Senator Kennedy). Their deaths left the country in despair, and though many continued to ‘fight the good fight’, it was painfully obvious that a unique era in American history was coming to an end.

Would we ever find men such as these again? Could we?

It’s been some time since men like Dr. King and Senator Kennedy stirred the hearts and minds of this nation. It’s been some time since words such as ‘equality and truth and justice and integrity’ have been used by those that seek public office. Fiscal responsibility has replaced social responsibility – or so it would seem. In truth, our so called leaders today are not fiscally responsible, nor socially concerned. Partisanship and personal gain, corporate influences and favoritism, are the mode of today. And, what’s most shocking, is that it is known and accepted, and without shame.

For those who are old enough to remember, these words, spoken by Bobbie’s brother Ted Kennedy, may spark something long dormant in your heart. For those too young to remember the Senator, the words may give you a glimpse of who the man was, and what he stood for. And, hopefully, give insight into a time when Americans truly believed in a society which sought to live up to the ideals it professed.

When good men, in the face of evil, stoop to the level of their foe, they have ceased to engage in a battle of good versus evil and joined with their enemy, conceding the defeat of their values and ideals.

In 1947 Soldiers who had engaged in the use of ‘water boarding’ when interrogating Allied prisoners were convicted of war crimes. There was no hesitation, nor question, in condemning the practice as torture – until now.

I have been amazed (shocked and amazed) by the willingness of some to resort to actions – abhorrent and inhumane – that would be (and have been) quickly condemned when done by others. The relative ease with which values, long held dear, are put aside, replaced by acts universally recognized as barbaric, causes me pause.

King George has said, “We do not torture”. It is a lie. We do torture.

Torture is no less evil, no less abhorrent, and no less a despicable act when we – America - engage in the practice, than when any other nation does. It should be condemned, and those that practice or condone its use should be prosecuted.

Arundhati Roy, the author of “The God of Small Things”, said “once you’ve seen something, you cannot un-see it”. One can pretend they didn’t see, or profess they didn’t know, or deny they had any complicity, but that too is a lie. Silence is as political an act as any other, albeit the most cowardly.

The ideals and values Americans have long espoused hang in the balance. They will be confirmed or denied by our actions or inactions, and we will bear the burden of living with our choices for many years to come. Virtues and values cannot be claimed only when convenient. We, individually and collectively, either hold dear the rights of human beings or we don’t. And our decision regarding human rights will be known, not by our words or proclamations, but by our actions and practices. We cannot claim to be humane while acting inhumane, nor just while acting unjustly. And, we cannot claim to be lovers of freedom while denying others their basic human rights.

To those who have conveyed to me the sentiment “America, love it or leave it.” I say, “I agree” and “I do”. It’s my country. I love it. I love the ideals of America. I love the hope and promise of America. I love America.

I love America so much that I refuse to sit idly by and watch as some – professing a perverse patriotism – attempt to dismantle the very foundations of America. I love the America that was formed to promote ‘life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness’; the America that was formed ‘of the people, by the people, and for the people’; land of the free and home of the brave.

I love the America that prompted men to rise up and say, with sincerity and conviction, ‘Give me liberty or give me death’. I love the America that stood, proudly, for justice and equality, and freedom; freedom to speak your mind, and freedom to act.

I love America.

I resent those that would pervert America for their own personal gain or benefit, or partisan interest. I resent those that would try to weaken America through fear or manipulation or dictate. I resent those that would attempt labeling those that dissent – not only a right but a duty of all citizens – as un-American or unpatriotic. I resent those that, through apathy or indifference or sheer laziness or ignorance, allow others to minimize, subvert, or destroy the rights and freedoms guaranteed to each citizen – regardless of race, creed, color, or anything else - under the Constitution; the Constitution that so many of our forefathers have fought and died to defend.

I love America.

When I look at our flag I cannot help but feel a sense of pride. Within that cloth of stars and stripes I see my Uncle who was in the second wave of troops to land on Omaha Beach; I see my Father who, at 17 years of age, sailed off to war; I see my Brothers who continued that tradition of military service, enlisting during a time of war; I see those that served with me as well, young men from across America who willingly took an oath to ‘defend the Constitution against enemies both foreign and domestic’. And I see those who did not serve militarily but at home, ensuring that America continued to function. In short, I see Americans; men and women who come from strong stock, from ancestors who cherished freedom and justice and would never bow their heads to any dictatorship, whether at home or abroad. What I do not see when I look at our flag is buildings and offices and bureaucracies and committees. I do not see political parties, secret agendas, corporate interests, political action groups, or politicians. Nor do I see those that violate and betray the decency of our country and its citizenry by abusing others.

America, love it or leave it? I’m here for the duration. Let King George know.

Why? Why? Why?

When children are young and inquisitive they learn much by asking the simple question: “Why?”. And, as many exasperated parents can attest, their follow up questions (same as the original question) can go on and on and on and on and on.

As cute (or infuriating) as the question can be, the simple “Why?” is, undoubtedly, the single most powerful question one can ask concerning anything; and everything.

“Why is the sky blue?”

“Why can’t I stay up late?”

“Why are we still in Iraq?”

Even if one buys into the lies, misinformation, and false understandings which led to war, the question of why we’re still there needs to be answered.

Is it to establish democracy? Not really, but let’s pretend so. The Iraq Government – elected by the people of Iraq – has repeatedly asked us to leave. They have stated that the fighting will not stop until American forces are gone. American military Commanders have stated repeatedly that the situation in Iraq cannot be resolved militarily. So, the question is, “Why are we still there?” Another question one might ask is, “What good is a democracy in Iraq if we do not allow that democracy to self-govern?”

And, what has happened to democracy in America when, clearly, the vast majority of Americans want us out of Iraq yet our Government ignores the ‘will of the people’ and pursues it’s own agenda? ‘…of the People, by the People, and for the People…’ are words not to be dismissed nor ignored no matter what any ‘Decider’ may think. Either America (and Americans) is (are) free, or it (and we) are not. Emperor George has failed his oath of office. He has done so intentionally, and with great vigor. Why, why, why, is he still President? Why is Dick Cheney still Vice-President? Both swore an oath to defend the Constitution, but both failed to do so; and, in fact, have worked to weaken and subvert the Constitution.

I just wanted to say that outright before the Senate and the Emperor sign off on H.R. 1955 which will make it illegal to advocate such things.

Oh, in case you’re wondering why we are still in Iraq, consider the following possibility:

A short while ago I was invited to watch a tech-type broadcast on Ustream.tv. After the broadcast I spent some time ‘surfing’ through the various streams on Ustream and discovered ‘MoeCash’. Moe regularly broadcasts via Ustream.tv under the name ‘MoeCash’ or ‘Moe-to-go’.

Moe is an Iraqi born Muslim living in Canada. He’s a songwriter, rapper, music-mixer, and ‘on air’ personality. But there’s a lot more to Moe than just his musical talents. He’s a man of conviction and passion; a man with a good heart; a true humanitarian.

I would encourage everyone to check him out on Ustream.tv or at his blog at MySpace.com/MoeCash. If hip-hop isn’t your musical preference, don’t worry – he’s been known to spin some R&B, Motown, and other things as well on occasion. And, if your nice, he just may take a request or two.

Congresswoman Jane Harman and Co-Sponsors [see below] have succeeded in getting H.R. 1955 passed. The bill, which is titled “Violent Radicalization and Homegrown Terrorism Prevention Act of 2007” is in direct conflict with the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution of the United States of America. Nonetheless, 404 members of Congress voted for the Resolution [only 6 members voting against, and 22 abstaining] and sent it off to the Senate.

The Second Continental Congress issued the Declaration of Independence July 4th, 1776. In the Declaration it is established that ‘the People’ have not only the right, but the duty, to throw off any Government which seeks to exert rule over – instead of for – the People.

It is the Constitution which establishes a ‘government of the People, by the People, and for the People’. The same Constitution which the noted Representatives took a solemn oath to defend, they now willingly seek to undermine. In case they’ve forgotten, I offer a simple reminder:

"We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness. --That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed, --That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness. As an Army Veteran this is the first time in my life to cheer Navy - but I have no choice.

This has nothing to do with Academy football or any other inter-service competition. It has to do with something far more important. It has to do with honor, integrity, and honesty.

Unlike his Army peers, Admiral Fallon, CENTCOM Commander, did not wait for retirement and pension approval to speak his mind. He voiced his opinion and encouraged others not to engage in wordplay such as threatening 'World War III' if Iran doesn't comply with U.S. wishes or demands - such as Georgie Bush did. He also encouraged diplomatic processes rather than threats and ultimatums. Wow. Now this is a Commander - a real Commander - not a suck up, brown nosing butt kisser.

So, again I say, 'Go Navy!' And a well deserved salute to the Admiral is thrown in as well.

Our armed services need more men like the Admiral. He truly is a man of valor. And God knows we could use more men of valor.

I am a member of the PVA (Paralyzed Veterans of America).

Brian Ross (ABC News) reported on Charities involved (supposedly) in aiding Veterans. There were some big name, well known, organizations listed that rated a big, fat ‘F’. The F rating was given to organizations which provided less than 35% of their revenue to actually assisting Veterans. As a member of the PVA I was quite shocked to see the big red F stamped over the PVA logo during the broadcast. Was this true?

I looked up the financial statements on-line. Hmmm… Disturbing. But, the same couldn’t possibly be true of my Chapter (Bay Area & Western – Palo Alto, California) of the PVA. Could it? Another on-line review of financial statements added to my depression. It was worse than the National PVA’s Consolidated Statements.

With $699,728.00 in assets, the Chapter’s largest expenses were Compensation, Fundraising, Conferences and Travel, and Office Supplies. How much went to needy Veteran’s? How much?

General Abazaid, retired, recently announced that Americans ‘should relax’ and that we’ll be in the middle east for ’25 to 50 years’. My initial response was to just scratch my head and sigh, but after thinking of his words for awhile I find myself growing more and more nauseous. The word ‘relax’ isn’t one you often hear when referring to war. Relax? Something is wrong when one can encourage people to ‘relax’ regarding war. How cavalier. How disrespectful. How absolutely stupid.
Relax?
People are dying.
Relax?
More people will die.
Relax?
This man was in charge of our troops for a time. Was that what he communicated to the Soldiers? Relax?
Is that what he would tell the wounded and maimed in our VA Medical Centers? Relax?
Did he tell the families of our fallen Soldiers the same thing? Relax?
Did he tell the innocents in Iraq to relax too?
How does this man’s mind work? - or not work?
Relax?
If I could thank God for only one thing today, it would be that Abazaid is no longer Commanding troops.

We torture but - we don’t torture. How far will this administration go in trying to defend its indefensible self? Apparently, there is no limit. Even more shocking – and equally shameful – is how much the citizens of America will tolerate from this barbaric and shameless government.
Our social conscious is gone. Period. We have no defense, and there is no rationale that can – in any way, shape, or form – justify our actions and our inactions. History is replete with unacceptable excuses offered by societies in vain attempts to justify atrocities committed. They just don’t fly. They never have, and they never will.
Do we think we’re the exception? Apparently so, but it’s not true. We aren’t exempt. Human decency is not a uniquely American virtue. And, even if it were, it would no longer be, given this perverse administration’s actions. Lies, deceptions, half truths - It’s enough already. Enough!
No American who has read a newspaper or watched a television newscast can excuse themselves. We are, one and all, without excuse. And each day that passes by that we don’t demand accountability, is another day of complicity. How will history recount our society’s behavior? How will history record what we have done? – and haven’t done?
Every virtuous or noble ideal that we once held dear now serves to condemn us. We have traded our values, our beliefs, and in many ways, our souls, for a false sense of security. What does that say of us? What will history say of us? We are not the only ones who record and document events. Historians world-wide will write – as they always do – of the events that occurred during this period. And they will do so without a politically partisan perspective. Facts will be documented, occurrences noted, and actions recorded. What picture of America will that paint? A land which claims such high ideals yet acts in ways so contrary to those ideals that it defies logic? What other picture can be portrayed?

There’s been much written regarding General “P”’s report on the status of the war in Iraq. “Predictable”,” expected”, and “questionable” are a few of the responses I’ve heard. I have a few comments (and questions) myself. My comments and questions, however, are for the other General “P” – Powell. (Remember him?)
In an interview last week he voiced his opinion(s) regarding Iraq. First, he said that leaving Iraq would be a mistake. Later, (in the same interview) he stated that we would be forced to withdraw our troops in 18 months. This, he said, would be out of necessity from over-taxing our troops.
Am I the only one confused by this double-speak? If we’ll be forced to withdraw our troops in 18 months (out of necessity), why not withdraw now? What does this General “P” think we’ll accomplish in the next 18 months that we haven’t been able to accomplish in the past few years? And why would he think a tired and worn force would be able to accomplish something that couldn’t be accomplished when they were less tired and worn?
The news is replete with Generals and their opinions lately. It’s almost enough to make me gag. How wise they seem to be ‘following retirement and pension approval’ – or, at least they try to appear wise and thoughtful once on the CNN payroll or ‘paid talk circuit’. Such wisdom, I suppose, comes only after retirement it seems. It’s a shame that these men can’t find their voice while in command of our troops. If they could, perhaps the death toll wouldn’t be so high, nor the list of injured so exhaustive. The late Colonel Hackworth (a true American hero) was right in referring to these men as ‘perfumed princes’, more concerned with their careers than their troops. Would that they be ‘wise’ when it mattered – when it would make a difference.
There’s an old saying: “Opinions are like Generals. Every President has some, and they all stink”. Wait, did I get that right? Hmm… Get back to me in 18 months.

Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, stating the obvious, spoke to a very quiet crowd of Republicans. He voiced concern about the future of his party and encouraged a more ‘moderate’ position.
He said, “in movie terms, we’re losing at the box-office. We’re not filling the seats.”
There are many reasons why the Republican Party is on shaky ground. Some may say it’s (Georgie) Bush, the Religious Right’s influence over the Party, the Iraq War, the Economy, or the embarrassing sex scandals involving GOP Representatives. To be sure, these all play a part in the general dissatisfaction with the Party, however; I believe the problem is rooted in the ‘abandonment of the Party’s core values’ and the isolation many Republican’s felt as they watched their Party – usurped by an almost fanatical group of extremists – pursue interests and goals to the detriment of the Party’s interests.
Like non-Republican citizens, Republicans were swept aside when their support of the current administration waivered. They too, finally, felt the abandon the Bush regime offers to those that don’t (without question or pause) support their every action. They were betrayed. The Republican Party was betrayed. They, like the rest of America, were lied to, taken advantage of, and (finally) discarded by the administration. The true meaning of the ‘if you’re not for us, you’re against us’ attitude of the Bush administration was finally realized.
This administration has placed itself above the law, weakened the Constitution, lied (repeatedly) to the citizens of this country, destroyed our credibility in the international community, engaged in torture and illegal imprisonment and waged an unnecessary war while amassing enormous debt… The list of atrocities goes on and on and on. Did the average Republican believe he/she was somehow exempt from the actions of this ‘out of control’ administration? That they, by virtue of their party affiliation, would suffer no ill effects?
In truth, this administration no more represents the average Republican than it does any other citizen. It represents itself, and its self-serving interests. It would be easy to point a finger at the Republicans and shout “ You voted for him! You supported him! You elected him!”, but that would be unfair. Who could have predicted such arrogance and deceit from an American President? To be betrayed by an enemy is expected. To be betrayed by someone you trust is painful. And make no mistake, the Republican Party has been betrayed.
It is time for Americans to come together; to put the needs of our country above Party interests. Repairing the damage done will require the participation of all Americans. Party affiliation aside, we are first and foremost citizens of America. It is our country, and we need to take back control of it.

With all that's going on in the world it's interesting to learn that Georgie decided to take the time to collaborate on writing a book. I don't recall hearing that particular 'campaign promise' during the last election, do you? "If elected, I promise to write a book." No, I don't believe so.

In the book -it's reported - the Prez reveals that he cries on God's shoulder - often. Hmmm. I haven't heard such a gut-renching, tear-jerking story since... Well, since the Prez's father revealed that he 'grieves' when he hears people criticized his son. Sad, so sad. Not!

If the Bush's would care to see real grieving, or tears, they might consider spending some time with the 3,700 plus families of our fallen soldiers.

Sympathy for Georgie and his Dad? Sorry, not today.

Today the President 'pledged' to 'urge Congress'... Ack! Sometimes the political rhetoric is hard to swallow. What is it about our government, which willingly sends hundreds of billions of dollars around the world, but leaves Americans to sink or swim, do for themselves, and make it on their own?

With an economic disaster looming on the horizon, Georgie voiced 'empathy' for those Americans about to lose their homes, but promised the economic changes would be 'a soft landing'. Huh? Tony Snow, Press Secretary, stated 'There will be plenty of time for backseat driving'. Again, huh? Is that another new 'buzz phrase' (like 'the blame game' phrase made popular during the Katrina disaster) which is intended to stop criticism of, and accountability from, Georgie Jr.? Oh, wait... Georgie has already said that 'history will judge him', so we're really not allowed to critique his performance (or lack of) during his administration. How convenient. Do all future Presidents get this 'free ride' too?

Our current Prez, of course, has a long history of not having to deal with the consequences of his actions (or lack of). Unfortunately, we, as a country, won't enjoy the same luxury.

$50 Billion?

In his State of the Union address he said 'we' have to control spending. Now, he's asking for $50 Billion more for Iraq (to continue funding 'the surge'). $50 Billion! That's in addition to the money already budgeted for the war (about $460 Billion), and in addition to the $147 Billion of 'supplemental funding' previously requested. Is the man insane? Is Congress insane? Or are 'we' insane for allowing this to continue? (Answer: All of the above.)

What will it take - honestly - before we stand up and say "No!" to this insanity?

No Child Left Behind?

Perhaps a more accurate phrase would be ‘All Children Left Behind’. The President has budgeted $30 billion to cover healthcare for America’s children for the years 2008 through 2012 – an amount which would not cover the costs of the children currently enrolled in the program, let alone allow for those that will be added over the years.

Priorities. It’s the same amount ‘added’ to his aid package to Israel, and the cost (conservatively) of waging the war in Iraq for two and one half months.

Conclusion: Foreign Aid – Ok. War – Ok. Healthcare for America’s children – No way.

Way to go Georgie boy. If ever our 'do nothing Congress' wanted a cause to fight for, might I suggest they look at this issue.

I stopped at a local watering hole on the way home. It was hot and a cold beer sounded good. The tavern was dark and cool, and nearly empty. I took a seat at the rear of the narrow bar, close to the television. CNN.
In just a few minutes, as if some unheard signal had sounded, the bar began to fill. I assumed it was the ‘just off of work crowd’. The stools and tables filled up quickly.
“Mind if we sit with you?”
I looked up to see a young couple, drinks in hand.
“Sure. Have a seat.”
They dropped down on the chairs opposite me and introduced themselves. After a few moments of awkward small talk their eyes turned to the television. Wolfe Blitzer in the Situation Room.
“So, what do you think of this war?” I asked.
“We support the troops.” the young woman replied.
“What’s that?”
“We support the troops.” she repeated, her partner nodding in agreement.
It’s a phrase I hear a lot, but don’t understand. “What does that mean?”
They stared at me, wide-eyed, but silent.
“I mean, specifically, what does it mean when someone says they support the troops?”
Silence.
“Well… Regardless of, you know… Regardless of what someone thinks about the war, you still have to support the troops.” the young man answered. This time the young lady was nodding her agreement.
I decided to nod in return. “But, what does that mean?”
Silence. Their faces flushed slightly as they looked at one another then back to me.
“Just curious.” I sipped at my beer.
“Do you support the troops?” the young lady asked, a bit defensively.
“Yes. I do. I definitely do.”
The woman’s eyebrows arched high on her forehead and she gave me a look that reminded me of the look my Grandmother would give me when I was a child. It was a combination “I told you so/There you go then” look. And, of course, if was accompanied by another slow nodding of her head.
“That’s why I think they should come home. Tomorrow. If not sooner.”
They stared at one another then back at me. They both frowned.
“You agree, don’t you? I mean, you said you supported the troops. Right?”
“I don’t know about that.” The young man looked thoughtful. “I mean…” He sighed.
“When we say we support the troops we mean that they should be given everything they need.” the woman interjected.
“Right.” the young man said.
“I agree. And what they need most is to come home.” I replied.
The young man grinned. “Just like that, huh? Just pack up and leave?”
“Pretty much.” I signaled the bartender for another round.
“But if we just leave… All those soldiers would have died in vain.”
“Soldiers never die in vain.” I replied. “They die following orders. They die defending themselves and their fellow soldiers. They die fulfilling their oath. They die doing what their country has odered them to do. But, they never die in vain.”
“But if we just… leave, then… What was the point of going over there in the first place?”
“Exactly. Good question. What was the point of going over there in the first place?” I asked.
“Oh, well…” He waved his hand in the air as if shooing a fly away. “I don’t get into politics. One side says this the other side says that…” He sighed again. “It’s confusing.”
“You can’t tell who’s telling the truth.” the young woman chimed in. “It is confusing. It gives me a headache.”
“I know.” I replied. “That’s why I think we need to bring our troops home now. Until we figure it out.”
“You know, I don’t think we’ll ever know the truth; never figure it out. It’s politics, you know?”
“Well, we can’t leave them there forever.”
“I don’t want to talk about this anymore. It’s depressing.” the young lady remarked.
I noticed an iPhone jutting up from her purse. “So what do you think of the iPhone?” I asked.
“I love it!” she exclaimed.
“It is fantastic!” her partner agreed.
They pulled their phones out and showed me the features. Their fingers moved quickly and I watched as they showed me pictures, browsed the internet, and tried to teach me about the operation of the sleek, shiny phone.
“It is impressive.” For some reason I began to grow depressed.
Three thousand six hundred plus Americans are dead. Tens of thousands wounded, maimed. Hundreds of thousands of Iraqi citizens dead. Twelve billion dollars a month spent on a war to which many are, sadly, indifferent.
I sipped at my beer and watched the young couple show me yet more features on their phones. It is a pretty slick gadget. I shook their hands, settled up with the bartender, and headed for home. I watched the pedestrian traffic as I strolled through the City. There was little that indicated we were a country at war, or that our government was spending us into an economic disaster. When did we become so casual, so cavalier, about something as devastating as war?
I thought of a blog post by a young soldier in Iraq. Basically, he just described his day. Tired, hot, always on edge. Never enough sleep. Scared and wanting to come home. Fiercely proud of his fellow soldiers and hoping no more buddies would be killed or injured. A hell of a situation to send a young man into. A hell of a situation to keep him in while we try to decide what we should do.
If Chelsea Clinton or the Bush girls were there, or even one of Romney's sons, would they still need to think much longer about what to do or how to do it? Doubtful.
We have abused those courageous enough to serve. Our government has abused them and betrayed them, and we as a nation have allowed it to happen. By our silence and indifference and fear we have allowed an ignorant cowboy and his cronies to have their way. We have allowed them to run roughshod over the Constitution and our civil liberties, wage war, and destroy our standards of morality by illegal imprisonment and the use of torture.
We should all be ashamed. But we should also all stand up and, finally, say “Enough.”

Wake up.

Perhaps instead of asking the Candidates what they will do, we should ask what they have done. Do the Senators and Congressmen need to be President before they get to work? What have Clinton and Obama done while in the Senate to address the issues they discuss now on the campaign trail?
It is an enormous mistake for Democrats to assume the last election was simply a message sent to Republicans - it was a message to all self-serving 'public servants'. Granted, I voted against Republicans during the last election. But I intend to vote against certain Democrats in the upcoming election (Pelosi being chief among the Dem's who will not get my vote). Americans are just sick to death of our inept government (Republican and Democrat alike).
At times I feel like I'm living in a foreign country. Where has America gone? We have no [mainstream] free Press, diminishing civil rights, and an economic disaster [if not collapse] looming on the horizon; yet all I hear are politicos debating the same issues they've been debating for decades. How can anyone take any of them seriously?
George Bush and Company have done almost irreparable damage from which I'm not sure we can ever truly recover; damage both domestically and internationally. These are, indeed, dangerous times we live in, and it's high time we held our elected officials accountable for both their actions and inaction.

I recently shared my frustrations regarding the (mainstream) Press and the Bush administration with Helen Thomas, the incomparable UPI Journalist and White House Correspondent. Thought I'd share her response.

"Everything you say is true and more so; but I honestly believe the people will wake up and the shamed press will begin to do its job again; we have been taken by the pigmies; the right wing talking heads and a president who could care less about the u.s. constitution, but I believe there is always hope and we should all be in the streets again; bush has had an easy ride. To this moment he will not say why he went to war, killed so many people, because whatever the reason it is unacceptable-don't despair but I agree we're running on empty now" - helent

Democracy

So, is Democracy dying in America? I wonder.

When did we (America) become so - complacent? Indifferent? Uncaring? It frightens me sometimes. Really, it does. I truly think our country may be broken - and possibly beyond repair. (Not that anyone is really trying to repair it.) The Democrats in D.C. are equally as bad (and culpable) as the Republicans. Both are self-serving; more concerned with reelection than doing their jobs. I think the only difference between the two parties - that I can see - is that Democrats sex scandals usually involve women.

Journalism

C-Span's recent broadcasts of Bill Moyer and Dean Baquet were interesting and thought provoking. The broadcasts were also depressing. The future of a 'free and unbridled Press' seems bleak. Of course, I'm referring to 'old media' - internet reporting seems the logical progression and is without restriction (at least at the moment).
As a younger man - part of the generation who opposed the Viet Nam war, received the right to vote at 18, and fought for Civil Rights - I valued the investigative, fact based, unbiased reporting of dedicated and ethical Journalists. That was when 'news' actually was news and not packaged entertainment or propaganda disguised as news. And news consisted of, as [Dragnet] Joe Friday would say, "The facts, M'am. Just the facts."
I fear for the younger generation. They have grownup without the advantage of a true free Press - also, diminishing civil liberties and an apathetic, self-serving government.

I have to take a moment to say a word of thanks to someone I'm sure most Vloggers know, or know of - Ryanne Hodson. When I first discovered Vlogging, I was amazed and in awe. What a powerful new medium this is. I wanted to be involved, but - alas, I'm a Barney Rubble in a George Jetson world! Blogging, shmogging - I didn't know a thing. But after reading "Secrets of Videoblogging" [Michael Verdi, Ryanne Hodson, with Diana Weynand and Shirley Craig] and watching a vlog on compression Ryanne had posted on the web, I was able to start a website, upload video, and link to the videos. Amazing. Guess you can teach an old dog new tricks after all. Thanks Ryanne! It's always a blessing when someone takes the time to share themselves, and what they know, with the world.

The destruction in Florida was startling; almost unbelievable. Mother Nature can be merciless. One can only hope the citizens of the four counties in central Florida will receive the assistance they need. I say 'hope' with just a touch of sarcasm. The State is still waiting for the assistance it requested back in December.

Of course, the Govenor spoke with President Bush - who assured Jeb's replacement that federal help would be provided. Hmm... If the Floridians are standing in line behind the citizens of New Orleans, they could be in for a very, very long wait.

You remember New Orleans, right? Katrina? (If only the Fed's did.) Of course, in defense of the Government, we are busy destoying/rebuilding/destroying/rebuilding Iraq. I guess America will just have to wait. Hmmm... It's the 'compassionate consevative's' way, I guess.
